Tesla Cybertruck appears to be facing significant sales challenges. After initial hype faded, and over a million reservations turned out to be as real as unicorns, Tesla is now enabling leasing options and free upgrades to move its inventory of the futuristic pickup truck. The company’s recent silence on the Cybertruck, even omitting it from their earnings call, speaks volumes about the situation.
Tesla initially projected sales of 500,000 Cybertrucks annually and established production capacity at the Giga Texas for 250,000 units per year. After working through the initial reservation backlog with fewer than 40,000 deliveries, the automaker is now struggling to sell the remaining vehicles.
This should surprise no one. The reception was poor, delivery was poor. It’s a niche market item in an existing niche market. On top of that, the de facto spokesperson of Tesla isn’t well liked by a lot of potential buyers.
“niche market,” is a way of saying they made a bad product few want.
pickup trucks are hardly a niche product especially in the us
I don’t think I’d call that thing a pickup. I’m not gonna run to the farm and pick up a 1000lb bale of hay in that thing. A Baja looks like it has more bed space.
Most pickup truck owners don’t do that either.
Maybe in the US they don’t…
And more ground clearance
To be fair, it’s valid to cater to niche markets.
However, that wasn’t what Tesla was aiming to do.
cybertruck is barely even a truck at all. its a truck shaped car for rich assholes to look rugged.
Which is a very niche market. I’m not part of that market.
pickup trucks are hardly a niche product
Tanks camouflaged as pickup trucks are.
When did they start importing the Hilux?
And the cybertruck is hardly a pickup truck. What were you saying?
deleted by creator
Just wait till DOGE start requiring it for all government vehicles
I’d like a GTA singleplayer cheat making every police car a cybertruck that can’t pursue you for long and would rather lose control and do a barrel roll than even get close to you.
“Isn’t well liked” is quite the understatement. “Despised” is more like it. I actually like the way the cybertruck looks, I think the technology is interesting, and if I really wanted to, I could probably afford one.
I wouldn’t drive one if it was given to me for free. I’d rather take a taxi every day than drive a public display of support for the treasonous fascist manchild that owns the company.
Tesla’s second biggest problem is their shit standards and quality control. Their first biggest problem is their shit corporate leadership.
I swear that every time I saw one, the people around would point and laugh. 100k+ to drive a car that is always broken and mocked by everyone is quite expensive.
I mean off the bat that’s one of the worse combinations of people/product I’ve ever seen. I mean off the bat electric car’s target market is people that want to think they are doing something better for the environment.
So… then the guy making them goes loudly in the “fuck the environment” group.
To top it off though, Cybertruck itself always confuses me. I don’t know who the target audience is. The original tesla’s I could look at and think, that’s a cool car, if they ever came down in price I’d be interested.
Cybertruck you look at and think… What a car would look like if you scaled up games from the 32/64 bit console era and made them HD without increasing the polygon count.
We’re not all buying EVs for the environment. I bought an EV because I think the car is cool and it’s really enjoyable to drive. It’s nice that the “gas” is also significantly cheaper, but that wasn’t high on my list of reasons to get the thing, either.
The EV owners I’ve talked to didn’t buy them for the environment, either, but I haven’t talked to any Leaf owners or anything. Maybe they’re more environmentally conscious. It being better for the environment long term is definitely nice, and I hope progress continues on batteries made with less toxic components.
Thankfully, I did not buy a Tesla and they were never on my list of options because of Elon. So he definitely alienated a customer due to him being an awful human being. I also won’t use any of their charging stations, since I don’t want them to profit off of me.
You could say we bought our Teslas “for the environment” in a way, though a bit roundabout. When we bought them (2018), it was after having previously leasing a Leaf which had shit mileage and poor performance over 40mph. We wanted to signal to the industry with our dollars that we wanted the EV movement to succeed. Because apparently money is the only thing they listen to. We knew full well that EVs were only a step toward a greener future or whatever but we wanted the industry to take that step and understand that being environmentally friendlier was important.
Plus the initial sales were to people who had already committed to preorders at a lower price for a truck that was hyped up to be far better than the end result.
Cybertrucks are basically No Man’s Sky but without the possibility of being good in a half decade.
Cybertrucks are basically No Man’s Sky but without the possibility of being good in a half decade.
Dag, yo. 🔥
Isn’t well liked…. Is a Nazi.
Let’s not forget the quality. Also poor.
Plus it looks stupid, like what my drawings of a car looked like at 5 years old
It is jaw dropping that only 40,000 of their one million+ reservations actually turned into sales. Thats 4% conversion!
Also, trucks are not a niche market. And there is pretty minimal overlap between the kind of douche who wants one of these and people who object to Musk’s behavior. It’s designed for his cult, especially.
Nazi truck.
I can understand why Nazis like it, given the truck’s habit of trapping you inside as it engulfs you in flames.

Every time a Tesla burns a devil gets it’s horns.
Innocent people are being killed. Not really something to celebrate.

Fashcan?
The best thing they could do for their sales is get rid of all ties to Elon Musk.
I definitely would’ve considered Tesla as my first EV but as of now they’re dead to me. If he was completely gone then that actually becomes a selling point for me.
While true this still won’t make the Cyberdrumpf meet EU regulations. You can’t make it street legal here.
Instead they did the opposite and gave him the biggest bonus in world history.
As the article title states, unlike Elon Musk, Tesla pulls out.
They’ve gone a long way on flash and sex appeal but I think a little straightforward practical value would help them a lot. The market is awash in good competition now so their novelty effect is gone. And the sex appeal has ended for everyone except for 40k cyberdouches.
I remember posting about how a guy with a cybertruck would be an immediate no go for me and I was told by a guy I was being too judgy lol
It’s a solid real world filter.
This is definitely more acceptable than “no social media” being a red flag. Got that one before lol
No social media is a green flag IMO.
You’re literally using social media right now.
Edit: Downvote me all you want, but the fact of the matter is that Lemmy is social media. There’s media on here, and we discuss it in a social setting. Literally the definition of “social media”.
Anonymous social media like this is not what people think of when someone says “social media”.
Pseudonymous, not anonymous. It’s a little difference, but one that can determine whether you land behind bars/dead/doxxed.
All social media can be anonymous if you want it to be ;)
I like the term that was applied to reddit, antisocial media.
Both can be true. I’m reducing my usage of the REALLY BAD social media and trying to make THIS social media better.
Well, ackshually ☝️🧐
I give the gift of a free bird to any I pass on the street.
Are you Lynyrd Skynyrd?
I did go to high school in Alabama, and know somebody from Muscle Shoals …
lol same
Is no social media a red flag?
Not really, but since we live in a world where most people are happily sharing their lives online it’s easy to imagine how not using social media might make people think you have something to hide and, therefore, can’t be trusted.
Few it fewer people are actually using Facebook and similar to share their lives because it just feels really intrusive.
Mostly because how much advertising is now showed down your throats.
If they want to know more about me I can share my camera feed but it’s like 98% cat photos.
To a lot of people yes, but I think they’re more worried there’s nothing that proves you’re a real person, if that makes sense.
I see it as a liability more than anything. Your data is forever.
Imagine a cyber truck bro listening to Joe Rogan in that thing. How does that not make every woman in sight instantly aroused?? /s
My panties are soaked! I’m also a pudgy middle-age dude.
:(
You can buy incontinence sheets at the pharmacy, y’know?
If they’re not branded by right-wing personality I’m not interested.
This is valid just on taste alone. The thing was ugly even before Elon started his descent into madness.
Rich enough to own a cyber truck, but not bright enough not to own a cyber truck. Yeah it’s what they “call look at me” energy.
Politics notwithstanding people like that are just tiring to be around.
All they had to do was build a solid, reliable truck, and not be fascist. Instead they build a poorly glued together piece of shit and sieg heil. I fucking hate this timeline.
Don’t hate the timeline, hate the news. There are real people out there still trying to make the world work, getting stepped on, pushed over, marginalized, silenced. They need you. They need all of us. Do not let The Bastards win.
(I’m still workshopping the “don’t hate the player hate the game” - suggestions are welcome. Words can still inspire people, even before coffee)
Thanks, friend. Much needed words. Maybe I’ll put my decades of counter strike to good use at some point.
I hear it pairs well with Super Mario Bros
I suddenly realize why I was so good at bhopping without scripts. Haha I’d get banned for cheats and never cheated once.
I fucking hate this timeline.
I keep seeing people say this. However, hate is what created this timeline. I don’t believe it’s what will get us into a new one.
I mean no offense towards you; I want you to know this. I guess I just finally realized what it is that bothers me about that statement. In fact, I share your sentiment. Because not only are they poorly made, common sense safety measures are removed and replaced with poorly engineered crap that traps people, while other badly designed components catch fire and burn them to death.
First time I’ve used this phrase, myself. But I had such hope for the future and I guess I am finally admitting my hope is gone.
I do not blame you. I just happen to be the most stubborn idiot I know. shrug
Edit: I go back to my feed and see this:
Got a good chuckle at the bitter irony…
I think the answer is some kind of cynical optimism. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. You never know, they might all die tomorrow in a plane crash or something.
My cynical take on that stance is they probably overstaff the airpots they are flying through to ensure that doesn’t happen. But yea maybe they fall down an elevator shaft.
Somewhat ironically, they understaffed the airport they all fly through, and yet somehow it was innocent civilians that died.
I detest this timeline. I am disgusted, really. I’ve never quite understood hate, though; to me hate feels like making a solemn vow that subject of my hate will always have power over me. Because hate is irrational. It overpowers reason. But it is only through reason and logic I find myself.
The catch 22 is fear. Fear also deprives is of reason, but it also shames us, lessens us. Just as Yoda taught us, “Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”
I don’t wanna suffer anymore. But I don’t want anyone else to suffer, either. Not even those responsible; I just want them gone from our timeline.
Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny. Consume you, it will.
That hate came from somewhere.
That hate came from somewhere.
Yes? And if you fight fire with fire the whole world burns.
I still refuse to see it as a truck. The defining feature of a truck is its bed, and the bed on this thing is presented as an afterthought. Covered, undersized, impossible to access from the sides. It’s just a tank. A penis prosthesis for the undersized.
And SpaceX had such good publicity, also notably one aesthetically the very opposite of sieg heil.
I mean, aesthetics of Tesla advertising and design and everything were pretty different from SpaceX from the very beginning. I wonder how could Musk be the founder of both. Maybe they’ll find traces of a brain worm in him too. Can’t be solely ketamine.
I wonder how could Musk be the founder of both
he’s not a Tesla founder, he only bought it
OK. Then I’d guess it’s him sabotaging the idea of EV’s.
He has never founded or invented anything. Every business he owns, he bought from others. In some cases he forced them to refrain from claiming to be founders at all. He’s pathetic scum.
Apparently he did really found SpaceX. I’m not saying he did everything necessary on C-level to make it a functional company, but that’s not really required (though if we think of such companies as Sun, there one can really see Bill Joy’s deep participation in a lot of different core projects).

Exactly I thought this would be a purely functional truck at a good price, but for that much it is not worth it
Have they actually sold any for that little?

Yeah I thought so.
Quite a few people would think $60k is a good price. It’s not, but it’s more palatable in the current car market.
$80k+ for it is only justifiable by shitheads.

I’m betting high odds he will force the federal government to buy them under the guise of a green EV transition. With trump’s full blessing, of course.
The shittiest way to transition the government to ev.
Ugh. I can see this happening.
Maybe he’ll force their sale to Ukraine, so Trump can pretend he supports them even while the cybertrucks break down in the field faster than Russia’s WWII era tanks.

Nope. Not how that works. He did the salute. He went and showed his support for neo-nazis. If it quacks like a duck …
I’m actually a Cascadian hippie if you’d like to assign labels. Hell, I will even let you call me antifa. But not supporting Nazis doesn’t make me a Nazi.
I don’t hate on people with different views. I live in a very conservative area. Most of the people I talk to on a day to day basis are still wearing their MAGA hats. I’m actually not a fan of the democratic party. But at the same time I’m not dumb enough to fall in line with the new fascist agenda. There’s a huge difference between taking steps forward and burning down the system for personal profit.
Trump is an idiot with a personal agenda. Elon is a Nazi. And the people who don’t see this are mostly poorly informed. I don’t hate them for that.
But looking at your comments, it appears YOU are the one hating on everything different. Or you’re just trolling, which would make you an idiot or a child, neither of which are worth having a discussion with.
Nah, I hate him because when you look past his wealth, his “accomplishments”, and his fandom, you are left with nothing but a piece of shit human being.
Hi Elon. No, we hate you because you know you have Asperger’s, think yourself smart, but are blind to the fact that you need people in your life to filter your thoughts and actions to cover your weak areas and flawed perceptions.
Only a fool thinks himself beyond improvement. Elon Musk is a great example of squandered potential and self delusion.
squandered potential and self delusion
It depends on who you ask. In our fucked up culture where money > people, productivity > humanity, and dominating others > helping others, Musk is the ideal grand vision for what a person with “potential” will become. He has the highest score, therefore the best results.
It’s a fucking tragedy how many people admire both him and Trump for the most horrible reasons.
(In before somebody explains how this is capitalism’s fault. But I’m not going to disagree, lol)
Even by money standards he does stupid stupid things. How much money did he piss away on running Twitter into the ground and telling advertisers to go to hell. If he got the help he obviously needs he could have had it all. And his latest stupidity with the Nazi salute seems to be going down really well in Europe. Tesla sales evaporating in Europe. Just read that Cyber truck has completely flopped (shocking!)
nah, i also enjoy pointing and laughing when i see a cybertruck on the highway
edit (and at the people driving them)
…you get dropped a lot as a baby or what?
I got some advice for them: Fire your CEO.
Fire the CEO, for him to sell all his stock, recall all the trucks and go over them with a fine tooth comb for quality issues, force them all through safety tests and fix anything that’s unsafe, lower the price by 40%…, get rid of the tracking bullshit, You’ll still have a uglyAF “truck” but it might just be sellable.
Fixing safety issues would have to include that sharp front end. Maybe just ditch the entire “stainless” exterior and restyling the whole thing would help with that.
Pretty much start with the battery pack and drivetrain, start over after that.
Look at the havoc that dude leaves in his wake. Prime choice for president.
Fire your CEO.
Out of a canon, through some flaming rings, and into an empty bucket of water. If I have to watch a clown-show, at least make it entertaining.
Empty bucket of water? But we booked the shark - infested waters over a year ago!
Which would win? Clown or concrete wall? Let’s find out!
Is this the one they let musk design? Feels like a Simpsons episode…
Personally, I’m holding out for the Tesla minivan.
Wow, it’s beautiful and so futuristic! It’s almost like living in the future today. I bet Tesla could sell twice as many as the Cybertrucks of those. Provided he makes it bulletproof of course. The great weakness and the reason for the disappointing sales of the Cybertruck is that the glass isn’t bulletproof, I simply can’t think of any other reason.
The Cyberbox! Imagine it! A box, with wheels! Don’t need windshields because the cameras are superior.
Absolutely, I don’t need windows, I use Linux! 😋
Imagining my new all electric commuting box with a high fidelity decal of Linus Trovalds giving the guy in the back a double fisted middle finger!
With speed lines and fire ball theme. The reverse sound alarm is the same thing they use in kei trucks…cute Japanese voice model saying excuse me I’m backing up! For lights, we would want fog lights along with a fog horn, we would want 300w for normal driving, 5000w for blinding incoming traffic and flash bulbs in case anyone wants to follow me too closely. A green laser for traffic cameras, and an LED screen so I can tell the guy behind me things I did with his mother. " We went shopping together yesterday… At Victoria’s secret!"…and that’s the design and how I would end a conversation regarding Tesla trucks.
I guess if Hitler was allowed to design a car, Musk didn’t want to be left behind.
To be fair to Hitler, his cars weren’t trash
They made Mexico city what it is. The beetle is legendary. And the program “hoy no circular” or “today you can’t commute” was invented became too many people owned too many god dammed cars. So in the program they would allow you to use your car only in certain days. Additionally they modernized their metro system making it accessible for incredibly cheap. Not long ago for a few cents you could travel around the city a few stops. By comparison the trolley in sandiego is out dated as outdated can be and it only goes up and down the coast with only one rail heading east. Mexico city made a spider grid off they’re system. Like from any peripheral location you can travel to the center or travel in the periphery towards another center bound rail. Its great. You can go anywhere without a god dammed car.
Beetle was a copy of a Tatra anyway.
I can’t help but think that there’s a Broadway musical first act closing song somewhere in there…
At least that one had big cup holders.
That one ruined Danny Devito. Maybe we’ll be lucky enough this ruins Musk?
No thank you. I don’t want a swasticar.
I’d love to have one of those new production old style beetles. But we can’t buy them here because our govt sucks donkey dick.
You mean this style of beetle?
I’m not defending cybertruck just wanted to point out the awkward history of WV
The massive, massive difference is that the VW Beetle wasn’t a shitbox for rich people. It’s okay to say that once in a great while. the Nazis, despite being horrific in most ways, did have an idea that wasn’t bad and this was that. The VW Beetle was an affordable car and if something went wrong with it, you could probably fix it yourself with only a small amount of automotive knowledge. You really don’t even need to give Hitler credit for that considering he basically just told Ferdinand Porsche to do all the hard work.
Not so much the Cybertruck. It was Elon’s baby from the beginning and he took a very close personal interest in it.
The Cybertruck is a bad idea. Even for rich people. It’s been demonstrated over and over again.
Importantly, the success of the Beetle came after the Nazis. They built the factory using confiscated union funds as well as having people pay instalments for cars which they would never get, built two or three Beetles, then switched production over to war-time production, Kübelwagen. After the war the unions effectively took over the whole plant… and also bought a couple of farms to make sure workers and families had enough to eat. Most of that is gone now but they still have their own butchery, VW part number 199 398 500 A is a saussage.
this is beyond amusing :D
VOLKSwagen!
I know exactly what I said.
Swasticar is good! In my mind, I was calling it TeSSla.
VW cars are built by Uyghurs, which, last I checked, are a surpassed minority in China, that has to work under slave-like conditions.
But I guess most cars are produced like this.
Nobody builds cars under slave like conditions. It’s just not possible. Modern car factories are highly automated plants that require skilled operators. In the case of the VW Xinjiang, that was QC inspectors. There’s no way a hole in the wall car factory using outdated labor practices can come close to competing against modern production.
You can be a skilled Person and still work und slave like conditions. That has nothing to do with each other…
I’m talking about the ones made in Mexico.
Yea, it seems like beetle is one of the few models not produced in China (according one propter of chatGPT, so some salt is required 😆)
It seems to me, that the cars needed in the biggest quantities and Budget EVs are produced in China.
I wish journalist would stop calling this PS 1 Pontiac Aztek “futuristic”; it just highlights how shitty our future is going to be.
I mean it would fit well in Robocop or The Running man so I guess it counts
It would certainly fit this version of Robocop.
That’s retro-futuristic, a very different thing.
Both shitty visions of the future. Well the movie for Running Man took place 6-8 years ago, and the book takes place this year which could count as “future” since we’re only in February.
So things are going to go downhill real fast, is what you’re saying
Ironically, the Aztek is way better, despite its age…
Have they tried pulling out the “Make a vehicle that’s not a massive and shitty death trap,” or “Boot the Nazi from the company” stops? Because, I suspect doing those two might help it out.
The myth of Elon is still going strong. Now he’s taking over government agencies. Not that it’s the right move, but keeping him on might keep the stock at the insanely overvalued level it’s at. That’s all that matters.
Elon is all this company has, just like Trump is literally the only thing going on in the Republican Party. The republicans are going all the way with Trump, straight down the drain, and Tesla will do the same with Musk.
Why isn’t the puny, petulant man-thing that runs the Nazicar Factory not suing us all for not buying them? That’s how you deal with advertisers who don’t wanna advertise with him so why not consumers who don’t want to consume?
It’s the next stupid, asinine step.
I hope anyone who ever admired this fuck face is deeply embarrassed. Or losing money.
Give him some time. Once his cronies get everything working right he won’t have to sue, he can just deny federal benefits to people who don’t order a cybertuck and send their hearts out to him when they receive it.

Idk man, it was the Nazi salute and hostile takeover of the US government for me.
But you go ahead and gargle those Nazi balls
This guy sucks Elon’s toes
I was one of those that put down a deposit and happily waited for this truck to replace my 25 year old car. Then after he called the diver/rescuers pedophiles, I was instantly turned off. Now I actively push others to not buy a Tesla and refer to all Teslas as a Nazi mobile.
Get fucked Elon.
Wow, the Cybertruck was announced that long ago?
Honest questions: What attracted you to it? Do you like the design?
I will admit, when the first mentions of it came out, and it was going to be this cheap, capable, all-electric futuremachine, I was tempted to put down a deposit. At first I thought the design was functional, to keep manufacturing cheap and have a durable, Midwest-proof vehicle between the stainless and aluminum.
It turned out to be 100% the opposite of what I had imagined, so thankfully figured I’d wait. Decided keep my 10 year old car until it NEEDS replacement (which it does not).
Not OP, but regardless of it being ugly, it is novel and kind of goofy look, which has some appeal. Like buying a car designed by a child it’s sort of “fun”.
Otoh, I don’t have the cash to throw away on “fun”, and regardless, funding a nazi definitely ruins the fun, so even if I won the lottery, I’d have to find my fun elsewhere I suppose.
Also worth noting, ignoring all of that, the fact it was built so poorly and is clearly just flawed in ways that go well beyond the aesthetics also ruins it, even if musk wasn’t a nazi and the car wasn’t ridiculously expensive.
Well, at the time there were promises made that made the Cybertruck appealing. I actually would still buy it today if it wasn’t a Nazi mobile.
I honestly don’t mind the design. Sure some people hate it, but I didn’t care about others opinions on my car. That’s why my current vehicle is 25 years old. At that time, I was looking for a larger EV and during that time large EVs were nonexistent.
What sold me was the functionality. The concept had bench front row seating so I could seat 6(which they removed in the final). It had a usable trunk unlike the EVs at the time. There was frunk which was only on Teslas at the time. Also Tesla at the time had the highest safety rating among all cars. A promising auto pilot (which is a lie).
It also claimed to have a bullet proof shell and glass. While Seattle is relatively safe, there have been many instances where people have been murdered for road rage or just existing at a red light
Fucking why dude? Elon shit aside, you ostensibly knew what this thing looked like, right?

And it was the first electric truck for a little while, even though it ended up being delayed for so long and being an AWFUL truck and totally outclassed by both Ford and Rivian.
The thing is, for a truck that’s used for truck shit, functionality, practicality, and reliability are probably the most important. Styling will always be relevant to customers, but should be a secondary concern for a tough utilitarian vehicle.
It’s too bad they flipped those priorities and made an overpriced junky status symbol. I think Elon wanting people to see the “amazing” design was one of the main drivers behind it getting released when it did. It was clearly not ready 5 years ago since it’s still not ready now.
Ok dude…
I mean it’s a “truck” without a truck bed, but sure.
Have they tried making a decent truck?
Value is harder to deliver than hype.
