I think were getting a little to quick to the trigger in shitting on AI. I dont see any problem in what I saw watching the Ted talk. I didn’t watch every minute of it but what I saw for what the article is calling AI slop seemed like viable use of AI to create fictional creatures.

This is ILM, though, considering what they’ve accomplished in the past with hands-on tools, for the current chief creative officer to embrace AI so wholeheartedly, and for the result to just be “animal crossed with animal”, it’s pretty disappointing

Seriously the AI generated creatures were weak bullshit. Maybe they mostly looked good, but none of them evoked anything actually alien, which was the supposed point.

From the perspective of a person from this very industry - the examples are at a level of a 10-yo. And the execution is absolutely terrible, even not conisdering it’s from ILM.

Might look like any other “CGI” to people from outside the industry, but it absolutely is slop.

Well it either shows how meaningless your job is or that a 10 year old could do your job if the avg viewer thinks everything he showed looked as good as any other graphics out there. Good luck with your whole pretentious artist shtick, hope it serves you well while youre serving bud lights and mixed drinks at whatever bar you be working at after AI replaces you!

It’s crazy how it sometimes feels like it’s no longer enough to simply not like something - instead, one has to make actively hating it a part of their identity. People get conditioned to be triggered by certain keywords, and it doesn’t seem to matter what is said afterward or what the nuances of the particular case are - they’ve already decided how to react.

Watched the whole thing. He had some valid points, especially where full permission from the talent is concerned. The “field guide” models were pretty uninspired, but they did a good job showcasing what is possible.

I have mixed feelings. Using AI responsibly is the ideal goal, but we have seen that this is largely not going to be the case both now and moving forward.

As a biologist and fan of SciFi/speculative evolution, having it be AI is one issue, but the bigger problem to me is the lack of creativity. They’re literally just obvious mixups of two earth animals? Cmon, let’s have more imagination here!

I just tested with Gemini “Make an image of an alien creature that is a mix of a crustacean and squid, but with fur, climbing up a purple tree. there are lianas and vines falling down around it with orange flowers”

I think this speaker was fair in following up the video, which he made very clear was just a demo for getting ideas, with the notion that real artists are still needed.

The gen AI stuff we have now is only going to get better. Think about early CGI stuff like Toy Story and then think about Avatar. People are going to use these tools to create things, it won’t replace creativity, yet.

Everybody chill and enjoy the ride you old farts.
