Soooo, essentially WiFi enabled smoke detectors on trees? Yeah sounds like a simple, solid idea
Not a bad idea considering most fires do start near civilization which is where this iot strategy by far will have the highest density. Seems a little tricky to filter out false alarms from controlled fires though. For deep forest monitoring its hard to imagine a better strategy than high flying drones with thermal cameras.
Automated drones running scripts with thermal cameras and a human to verify seems like a much easier to implement and effective solution than these so-called “new tools”
I dunno. I think there is probably very high sensitivity for deep forest thermal signals, but near civilization it’s probably much more complicated to separate small fire from other thermal sources. These iot smoke detector things if in somewhat of a decent density and taking in to account thinks like wind direction, could be pretty smart and have a decent signal to noise ratio. Keeping in mind this is where th fires tend to start, it seems like a cool effort.
The last time the fires hit my area I was watching the fire progress via Purple Air sensors. If this one sensor was still sending, then my friend’s place up in the mountains was probably OK. Seems … kinda obvious almost?
surveillance cameras out in the forest? what a time to be alive! say bye bye to privacy even out in the nature, because everything must be watched
