We’re going through a shaky patch in the UK right now, with fascist wannabes like Tommy Robinson and Nigel Farage rising in popularity. It’s sad because I thought we were better than that but then Brexit happened and I wouldn’t be surprised if our next government was a Reform majority. And if they get in they’ll do everything they can to secure power forever.

What keeps me hopeful, in the face of this shitstorm, is the sense of community in my neighbourhood. People on my street look out for each other and support each other.

Driving manual (stick). I have an automatic now only because the model/trim I wanted doesn’t come any other way but if I could have got it in manual I would have. This car has less personality than my last one because I operate it rather than driving it. I literally have less of a connection with it.

Playing music on a record player. The ritual of removing the record from the sleeve, placing it on the deck, cleaning it, landing the needle. Listening to an album.

Cooking on gas instead of a halogen hob. Sure halogen is great and super easy to clean but gas is visceral and ‘real’. I also like to cook over charcoal or, even better, wood.

A group of us used to meet every week to watch Twin Peaks. We’d unplug the phone, drink coffee, and eat cherry pie (or apple for a bit of variation). Then we’d watch the episode again having just recorded it and try to figure out wtf was going on. Happy days.

I suggest with the rest of your time you start a side hustle. Doesn’t even have to be lucrative to start with since you’ve got this easy gig paying the bills.

Write romance novels, build websites, create music, record ASMR videos, write a cooking blog, write a koi carp blog and monetise it through ads, build an Etsy store where you sell hand-carved cheese, or a Redbubble store where you sell t-shirt designs, an Instagram account where you post photos of the snails outside your window, a Pinterest account that only shares pinned photos of spoons (don’t do this one, I’m already all over it) … anything you can do around your main hustle commitments.

You have the luxury of time to get something going. Who knows, maybe you’ll hit the motherload and your side hustle will overtake your main gig.
