To me this sounds like a fundamental problem with their business model. Private vehicles used for public transportation by people who aren’t well-trained commercial drivers.

I have always thought it was sketchy that we let random people in the US be commercial drivers for Uber without forcing them to get a new type of license or earn some kind of state certificate because most people are absolutely shit drivers and beyond that, there are rules for dealing with people (in this case disability stuff) that you should know if you drive the public.

Lame, Colorado is usually one of the most reasonable states. Polis is a decent Governor too. I never saw any of the bad stuff that was allegedly supposed to happen after we forced employers to post pay ranges with jobs, so I don’t really expect anything bad to come from regulating AI.

If we put strict guardrails and penalties with teeth around AI companies, they may go elsewhere, where they can act more unethically. That’s fine with me because Colorado already has water issues and I feel like we manage to be progressive without trampling all over personal liberties. I also feel like a good portion of people in this state are real people who haven’t had the idealism trampled out if them completely and still give/get good intentions.

Shit, I’m getting the itch to submit a citizens initiative to make the whole state an AI free zone right now. As for the AI decision-making, how about real, concrete, enumerable criteria. Vibes are not a suitable way to make big decisions. Fuck-off with your AI datacenters and opaque algorithms. Coloradans deserve to know how they’re being treated. I run a beelink mini, not the weakest one, not the most powerful one, and it handles docker containers and VMs fine. I don’t have a tkn of integrated storage, but rather this machine handles apps while a separate NAS does all the file storage. Most I ever had running was 2 VMs and a handful of negligible docker containers but I still had plenty of ram and CPU to spare. I also think the minisforum stuff looks good. Their n5 pro nas just came out and would have made a good server with room to grow. I decided against it because I have parts and I want to use them :-) so the beelink is holding down the fort while I Frankenstein together a rig from my old gaming PC in a huge case that will host all my apps and less critical media. Home assistant which will stay on the beelink because it needs high availability. I’ve been curious how the lowest priced minisforum models would fare.

Wow, that is quite the story. I have struggled with this question and how I would feel on either side of the equation. As a person who grew up in the conservative 90s who became a more balanced and freethinking person, I still have what might be an irrationally strong fear of STDs. This fear combined with religious conditioning around relationships kind of fucked up high school and early college for me. I was supposed to be boning the entire cheer leading team and I was learning about how angry Jesus was at my impure fantasies. My late 20s and 30s have been a lot better, but I still have a really hard time gaging risks and deciding how I feel about them so I tend to err on the side of being overly careful and miss a lot potentially great experiences with people. I think getting tested with a new partner is always wise.

One of the other commenters said “a lifetime of pills and difficult conversations”. That’s one of the scary places my mind might go to, but you could still reframe it as “I’m going to have get better at communicating needs and boundaries in my relationships, especially early on”. That sounds less scary and more fulfilling. I still would like to avoid getting infected.

On a positive note, the fact that she was upfront and honest about it is a good sign. I’d tread carefully but if I really meshed well with the person abd saw a medium/long term future for us, I would probably try to figure something out to make myself more comfortable in the short term, like asking her to confirm she took her meds and using protection. If she cares about you and you make it about your feelings and not blaming her.

Lastly, none of us are perfect and you might have a few oddities she doesn’t find particularly pleasant. Rejecting her for something that she can’t change could make her feel like she’s “not good enough” or “damaged” and even if you guys don’t shaboink I wouldn’t want a friend or crush to feel that way. That’s the shit her ex did. I think it would be better to tell her how you feel about her (positive) and express that your apprehensive about the herpes thing.

It’s not necessarily a solution, but my Garmin watch can still hold some of my cards, so I don’t need the NFC payment on my phone to duplicate that functionality. Do you wear or carry any other devices that can stand-in?

I miss this from cloud hosting. It’s helpful to be able to save, clone, or do whatever with the current machine state and easily just flash back to where you were if you mess something up. Might be too much to set up for my current homelab though. My server does have btrfs snapshots of everything directly in grub which has let me roll back a few big screwups here and there.

I’m a Buddhist/Atheist. There is far less to fight about here than between Christians/Atheist. I’m sure I’m a “bad” Buddhist too because I take the philosophical bits that make sense to me and leave all the deities and supernatural stuff alone, but Buddhists don’t seem to mind and most atheists don’t either.

As a former evangelical Christian, who also dabbled in atheism, antitheism, etc, I settled into something that’s probably closest to Zen Buddhism mixed with atheism. I’ve been on dates with people, many of them I probably never knew their religion, but the gung-ho Christians and the Mormons showed their incompatibility very quickly. Funnily enough, ex-catholics dig me and I like them. :-)

I don’t see myself dating someone who is theocratic, doesn’t believe abortion should be allowed, or wants me to go to their church with them. I sometimes tell the story of the time I was figuring myself out and ended up going on a date with a girl who didn’t believe in dinosaurs. I call her dinosaur girl. Nowadays I run a dual 4k monitor setup with the left centered in my FoV and the right one alternating between portrait and landscape. My laptop usually sits under the primary or to the bottom left. I connect over thunderbolt so I can easily swap out my work and personal laptop on the dock. Effectively I get 3 screens: my main focus, my distraction, and my comms on the built in display. If I’m gaming on the desktop I toggle the left monitor to another input. I used to have more screens but things are a lot more ergonomic now.

I do feel like I could switch to right monitor dominant, bit I think it would not be ideal considering sloppily moving the mouse to the top left on the primary would cause the mouse to jump to the secondary screen whereas on a left monitor dominant layout it would hit the border. You could offset the displays slightly to catch the mouse, but it’s not worth it.

I hate how VPN access is the scaffolding holding the building up making things look normal. You can visit all your normal web sites, you can bypass georestrictions, you can be a little less tracked than you might otherwise be. But what happens when they decide to do away with that scaffolding and we all find out they tore down the house behind it while we were enjoying “normalcy”. Too much of making the web functional depends on vpns and adblocking. We shouldn’t have to do this stuff and Chromes adblocking scandle should impact millions of users all around the world unilaterally removing adblocking from the web. I fear for the day we have a US only internet and a global internet, not just on paper, but in actual practice.
