This feels like an attempt to destroy open source projects. Overwhelm developers with crap PRs so they can’t fix real issues.

It won’t work long term, because I can’t imagine anyone staying on GitHub after it gets bad.

However, anything that requires security clearance or is PR for the employer will (in the US at least).

If you want a job that needs clearance, I recommend closing your social media now, stopping all drugs now, and wait at least 7 years before applying to those jobs. Limit travel. Work to have any mental health records destroyed (idk if you can actually do this) and cancel therapy. Stop using Lemmy, and don’t do anything that remotely indicates that you associate with divergent cultures (i.e. communism or anarchism).

For PR - just stay off social media and drugs and don’t talk about work except in an extremely positive way.

I mean my ex wife had what she called “resting bitch face.”

Everyone else just said she’s emotionless and has the exact same monotone of voice outside of her “customer service” voice. She could get angry, but she really didn’t get angry she just got loud. Until she typically lost it then it was different.

Looking back on it, people always told me “there’s something off about her.” I always kind of brushed it aside cause she was hot.

My kid wasn’t in school yet, but I looked at him, shook my head and said nope. Can’t do it. Won’t do it. Turns out I do value things other than fun projects and money, and by a huge margin.

It’s one of the reasons I couldn’t go into the defense industry. Not just working on weapons that are deadly to enemy combatants and innocents; but making profit off of doing so.

If there becomes a point in my career where it’s clear that my work doesn’t make things better, then I know I’ve made a mistake.

It’s the right moment to pierce those layers of abstraction that allow you to get through each day, and question why it’s so financially lucrative for the system you’re building to exist.

I’m glad someone said it because this thought popped in my head yesterday. Been thinking about the consequences of my system, and really if it brings benefit to the users, but also who it affects indirectly.

So far, I’m ok with it. There is part of it that adds some safety for the business, the users, and people affected indirectly. But it still has a profit motive and that’s the uncomfortable part.

Edit: I should clarify that I’m talking about my software system. Not the healthcare system in the U.S. like the author is. It’s nowhere near as lucrative as making money off of people literally suffering from life. But the author mentioned how the CEOs see numbers not people. If the numbers my system collects ends up hurting people, that’s what I was reflecting on.

Like read. Not generative AI crap, but read. They came to us and said quite literally: “how can we use something like ChatGPT and make it read.”

I don’t know who or how they convinced them to use something that wasn’t generative AI, but it did convince me that managers think someone being convincing and confident is correct all the time.

I don’t know why. The people marketing it have absolutely no understanding of what they’re selling.

Best part is that I get paid if it works as they expect it to and I get paid if I have to decommission or replace it. I’m not the one developing the AI that they’re wasting money on, they just demanded I use it.

That’s true software engineering folks. Decoupling doesn’t just make it easier to program and reuse, it saves your job when you need to retire something later too.

It’s a business transaction, sure. But the social interaction, while to us seems like sarcastic exaggerating, is humorous complimenting. In order to do that, it has to be language you can use frequently and honestly.

This is doing wonders for his mental health, likely because part of his thoughts are “what could I say to make ME feel more complimented than that.” He’s actively using positive self talk unconsciously.

The number of people I have found from highschool/college/random person on the street who I can’t find in Facebook: waaaaaay too many. If it didn’t tell you who was looking for you, linkedin would be far creepier of a stalking tool. I mean, shit I’ve found people I’ve only seen a picture of. Now I know where they work, where they used to work, and went to school. By extension I now also know where they likely used to live and at least the general area that they live now (provided they don’t work remote that is).

The more I think about LinkedIn, the more I want to remove my profile.
