If you like video game history you might enjoy this video from Vox. Quake’s custom keyboard mapping settings (unique for the time) was a big development in gaming. One gamer’s personal settings config became popular and ultimately established the WASD control scheme that has been basically the standard since.

I still prefer EDSF, but I remember skating in deathmatch using the arrow keys and ctrl, alt to fire, on my 36k modem

I played the hell out of the shareware version, and begged my dad to get the full game , at which point I blazed through all the difficulties. It was the first game that I eventually 100%ed. I was psyched to get it and be able to play it on steam and was surprised how much I remembered.

Mostly for nostalgic reasons, it’s one of my favorite games of all time.

Quake and Quake 2 were the beginning of a turning point in my youth which Half-Life would eventually complete. The rapid transition from someone who tried to use arrow keys to move and couldn’t navigate directories, to a WASD player on early broadband, craving new Mods to install and funny entity collision glitches to exploit for laughs. I am forever thankful for the first hand experience of what players could make with someone else’s game engine. Action Quake, Threewave, original Team Fortress…. I’d be a completely different human being without these and those later from HL, like TFC, DoD, CS, Sven Co-op, Action HL, Wizard Wars, Etc.

I remember playing Quake 2 in the dorm at university. This was right as everybody was getting LAN access in their room. Absolutely nostalgic.
