For anyone wondering of the references here

‘Pagliacci’ is a famous Italian opera from 1892 by Leoncavallo

“Vesti la giubba” (“Put on the costume”) is one of the famous songs sung during the performance … the basic story of the opera is that a clownish performer is cheated on and he even though he is feeling sad, depressed and unhappy about being cheated on … he still has to perform and make people laugh … so he ‘puts on the costume’ and pretends to be happy while being terribly sad inside.

It’s a famous opera that gives us the origins of the idea of the ‘sad clown’

Much like Quark being made to feel stupid and silly being dressed up as a female … he still ‘puts on the costume’, even though he feels stupid (btw - it was one of the most silliest episodes of DS9, but I still loved it).

I only know all this because I’ve always really enjoyed Luciano Pavarotti (if you ever want to get into Opera, look up this performer and everything he did for music, opera, pop music, and sharing it all with others young and old) … so here is his performance of “Vesti la giubba” … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0PMq4XGtZ4
