no. It’s difficult to recommend it, “no it’s good trust me, there’s like none of the subs you like, and also you should go to the settings and block this list of words, also block these instances, and also do you know what a Tankie is?”
I have a few friends that are fed up with Microsoft and Google and other big tech. We’ve been degoogling and trying Linux together (errr, they have - I’m the grizzled Linux junkie they all reached out to for advice).
Most of them have tried all the different fediverse products and they’ve found homes here and there.
Some of them have graduated into self-hosting even. I find this bit wonderful, if it’s unfortunate how far the industry had to rot before they considered the move.
Lemmy, no. Reddit, no. Fediverse: there are a few people (less than a dozen) that I have met IRL (“know” may be a strong word) and also have a more or less strong presence in the fediverse, primarily Mastodon.
I don’t know anyone IRL that uses the fediverse. They just use everything else and then complain it’s all owned by billionaires
Only the other bots in the farm I inhabit.
Nope, but I have had the thought that small-scale regional meet-ups could be fun.
On the one hand, smaller old-school forums do/did that sometimes and it can be really cool, if thinking in the spirit of the old internet.
ON THE OTHER HAND, I remember the infamous pictures from the Reddit meetup and good God, maybe not?

you can’t say that and then not link the pictures!
This is the one I was thinking of, but there are several interesting ones. I guess I’m being an asshole, maybe they’re all awesome. They certainly seem to be smiling and having fun, so I’m just really the dick here. But here’s the picture. Fuck, it is just…a lot. I don’t know. NSFW.
spoiler
well you have a point, it’s certainly weird. they are smiling, ok, but why would you do that which a lot of them are doing
I’m really torn. On the one hand, maybe I would be smiling!? I don’t know what happened! Part of me thinks, “I’ll have some of whatever they’re having!”
But then I don’t strongly feel, “THOSE are my people!” and I fear I’d be one of those faces nervously smiling(?) in the shadows at the back of the group. Also I have a strong sense of smell and I don’t know if I want to roll those dice.
Any chance you know where this meetup was?
I ask because I’m wondering if I might have been there but, like, before it got to…this. I used to attend weekly reddit meetups at a bar in Houston and they also held a larger meetup (maybe annually?). I went to that once and the location looked kinda like this. But I don’t recognize anyone in the picture and definitely didn’t experience anything like what’s shown…
I did make a lot of friends that way. When I moved away I tried to start something in my new city but it wasn’t big enough to catch on. I did meet a couple cool people though, and ~10 years later I regularly have one of them and her husband over to paint minis about once every other month. I guess my point is that not all reddit meetups got this weird.
I don’t know why my brain has chosen to retain this information, but this was the Baltimore meetup if I am remembering correctly.
lots of questions:
- Why are they flashing the camera
- What is the guy in the middle wearing
- When was this
- Why does only like, one guy have normal shoes
- Why is literally every guy there shirtless
I could go on.
What’s real life ?
Sadly no. Ive recommended the fediverse to a couple dudes, one of them is too much of a normie to care (i will lecture him again soon xD) and the other doesnt like the fediverse😐 chose bsky instead of mastodon… (oh and a third guy just said fuck u and fuck all this stuff alltogether, he was fed up with me complaining ab big tech lmaooo at least he uses matrix to chat w me now)
That would require me to actually know someone.
I envy you. You’ve reached what I desire.
It is not it’s all it’s cracked up to be. Trust me.
I’m in a rural area, and the few people I have to see on a daily basis are still too many.
Not yet, but it seems to be growing.
I don’t even know anyone that uses Reddit 🫠
Thats because they don’t talk about it.
I don’t even know anyone
that uses reddit
Me and my friend both switched from Reddit at the same time when the apps died.
Know him, I am him
Real person alert 🤖
But even for reddit I only know a person in real life that uses it. I tried to convert him, he said “there are too many Linux apologists” 🤷🏻♂️
I know more but they stuck with it for some reason. One friend may be on Lemmy too but I’m not giving them my username …
See? Tankies aren’t a problem at all. What’re yall worried about?
I’m not sure I know anyone in real life
They are all robots and NPCs.
