This is my apocryphal theory: The Devil never really betrayed God, he is just pantomiming being his adversary to make God look more benevolent and the only alternative for salvation.
The Devil tempts people to fall into sin so that they end up in hell and being tortured for ever, just as a cop under cover pretends to sell or buy drugs and then arrests those who fall into the trap.
This role is even consonant with his Angel name: Lucifer, the light of God. For there to be light there must be darkness, so Lucifer takes the role of that darkness.
(For the record: no, I didn’t read Ssndman or Predicator, nor saw the Lucifer TV Show, so I don’t know if this theory is already known. If so, please share where I can read more about it, thanks!)
In the Torah, the Satan, or Adversary, was indeed understood to be an angel under God’s command and on his side.
This is the only theory that makes the Left Behind series coherent which is very funny because it’s definitely not what the writers were going for
What even is that series. I can’t be bothered to watch it
It’s a very bad series of evengelical propaganda novels. A while back there was a blog that deconstructed them that I was really into as a teenager
Is that where the whole “all Christians disappear” trope came from? Because that’s certainly not from the Bible
Think it was from a couple decades earlier.
This is the level of theology I signed up to lemmy for.
Not much worse than Reddit, anyhow
It’s all a good cop bad cop routine to get people repenting
Honestly, it makes sense. Gotta keep the minorities out of heaven, like the bible said.
(no no, don’t pay attention to that typo verse that said “come as you are”, Jesus [read: hey zeuss] was hungover, it was the 6th of May)
